being Canadian | reflections and a roadtrip…

Canada.
Home of polar bears, the longest unprotected border in the world, and the Rockie Mountains.

Inventors of Lacrosse, Basketball, insulin, Jolly Jumpers and nursing pads (I know!! cool eh?)

Did you know that the real Winnie the Pooh was from Canada?? Yup – a Canadian Black Bear from Winnipeg.

Today is Canada Day. A day when millions of people celebrate Canada’s independence from Great Britain.

Fireworks, BBQs, family gatherings and general celebrating will occur all across this great nation. But not at my house.

I’m trying to talk Hubby into driving me up to Ottawa for the Canada Day festivities.

Why you ask?

Because the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are going to be there, celebrating with the ‘regular’ people. And I want to see her them.

Hubby wants to drive to Toronto to see the Phillies play the Jays. (and kick their asses)

We’ll see who wins. A road trip will be involved either way, which I LOVE. (He just got a brand new car a few days ago, so he’s still really really enjoying driving the highway 😉 )

I know that a lot of my readers are American, and as such, thought it would be a good idea to give you some insight into our little big corner of the world.

Wow…that’s cool eh??!!

* North America’s lowest recorded temperature was -81.4 degrees Fahrenheit (-63 C) at Snag, Yukon Territory, on February 3, 1947.
That’s pretty frackin cold eh?
* Superman was created by Canadians…. how about that??
* Far and away, the most amazing Canadian invention is…. {drumroll please}

…The tuck-away handle on the beer cartons 😉

A bit of lingo for ya eh hoser**

Pogey – the national word for welfare or social assistance (the PC term)
Poutine – fries smothered with cheese curd and gravy. It’s a heart attack on a plate, but it’s sooooo frackin good.
Two-Four – twenty four beers in a case (also pronounced two-fer.)
Toque – keeps yer head warm in the winter there eh?
**Hoser – a genuinely Canadian insult – Bob and Doug MacKenzie-style.

Whether you’re Canadian or American, take a moment to give thanks for the great countries that we call home and please enjoy your long weekend and celebrate safely.

  1. Um, I love Bob & Doug. Strange Brew is one of the best movies ever.

I hope you win the road trip…even though I’d rather go to the game. Which reminds me, I miss the Expos. I’ve been to more Expos games than any other MLB team. Which is odd…considering I’m from GA and have never even seen the Braves play at their stadium.

    • HA! Expos are seriously missed up here… BUT we have the Jays to ease the pain I suppose *yeah right*
I, myself am a Yankees fan, so I’m waiting for the day that Hubby surprises me with a trip to NYC to Yankee Stadium… **hint hint honey**

  2. Nice! Happy belated Canada Day! I am finally making my way over from Bruna’s Let’s BEE Friends blog hop.

Lindsay, I love your blog. Is there a way to follow it (RSS feed or Google Friend Connect)?
